Nate Larson

Nate Larson and Marni Shindelman have pursued a collaborative artistic practice for the last three years. Our first project, WITNESS, has been exhibited at The New Gallery in Calgary, Rochester Institute of Technology and Shawnee State University. Selections from the project were shown at Wall Space Gallery, Seattle; 23 Sandy Gallery, Portland; and the UTSA Satellite Space, San Antonio. The project was published in the fall 2009 issue of Exposure, accompanied by an essay and interview by Leslie K. Brown. Nate was interviewed on the Amsterdam television program De Hoeksteen Live! in June of 2008.

Our second project, SEMAPHORE, was featured in group exhibitions at Wells College, Aurora, NY; the Community School of Music and Arts Gallery, Ithaca; South Seattle Community College; and MICA, Baltimore. The project video SHORT MESSAGE SERVICE was screened at Herron School of Art and Design, the SPE Women’s Film Festival in Philadelphia, and exhibited in the 2nd Moscow International Biennale in Russia.

We placed in the semi-finals in the 2008 annual WORLD TELEKINESIS COMPETITION hosted by artist collective Noxious Sector and emerged as the global champions in the 2009 event.

We used GPS mapping software to make a large-scale interactive PORTRAIT OF RUDY GIULIANI for the Conflux Festival 2009 in New York City. Our second GPS performance, MY HEART WILL GO ON (FOR IRAQ), was completed in May 2010 for the Arts Interdisciplinaires: High Tech, Lo Tech, No Tech conference at RAIQ in Montréal.

Selections from our new project, GEOLOCATION have been featured in group exhibitions at the Center on Contemporary Art, Seattle; Studio Hart, Buffalo; CEPA Gallery, Buffalo; City Without Walls, Newark, NJ; Peloton, Sydney, Australia; and the Baltimore Museum of Art. The series will be featured in a solo exhibition in 2011 at the Contemporary Arts Center Las Vegas, and selections will be included in exhibitions at the Houston Center for Photography; Museum of Fine Arts Houston; Central Washington University; Grand Rapids Community College; and the Format International Photography Festival, Derby, UK.

Larson + Shindelman have lectured on their work at the Society for Photographic Education National Conference, Shawnee State University, Rochester Institute of Technology, the Alberta College of Art and Design, Nerd Nite NYC, and Johns Hopkins University. Upcoming lectures will include University of Texas at San Antonio and the Houston Center for Photography.
