Witness: A Psychic Collaboration

Notes on Process

After carefully researching Remote Viewing and Out-of-Body Experiences, we conducted a series of four experiments. In each experiment, one of the collaborators was the "sender" and the other was the "receiver". We predetermined the session would last five minutes, during which time the sender would select five specific objects to try to project to the receiver. The receiver drew their impressions during the selected time, in an effort to gauge the mind of the other. The sender then made color photographs to document the sent objects.

We used a pendulum purchased on eBay to determine that Marni was the first sender and Nate was the first receiver. We then alternated with each experiment, so that Marni send twice, and Nate sent twice.

The results were not shared until all experiments were complete.

Upon joining our separate results, we noticed a second layer of psychic conductivity, where the selected target items were joined by common textures, thematic relationships, or other shared traits. For example, the photograph of the Dice and of the Rabbit's foot both invoke the idea of luck or good luck charms. Or the T-Rex toy and small book on the Soviet Space Program both suggested the mechanized scientific future. The exhibition is sequenced to explore this second layer of psychic resonance, pairing images as diptychs to point to these relationships.

In addition to the photographic work and drawings, the exhibition also includes appropriated ephemera from our research into psychic espionage and out-of-body experiences. There are also two wall texts that collect statements of things that people would or would not do with psychic powers.
